GIVRY Clos du Cras Long 1er CRU FRANCOIS LUMPP 2022 MAGNUM
BURGHOUND : 91-94
2022 Givry “Clos du Cras Long”: Discreet but not invisible notes of wood toast and menthol can be found on the ripe but airy and cool aromas of red and dark pinot fruit, crushed anise and subtle exotic tea. There is both excellent density and power to the bigger-bodied flavors that exude a subtle minerality on the sappy, firm and serious finale. This is also very much built to reward extended cellaring and a wine that is highly recommended. (91-94)/2032+
François Lumpp, who began his career in 1977 without having inherited a domaine or vineyards, founded his own in 1991. However, some 30 years later he declared that he has completely withdrawn from the day-to-day activities in favor of his children Pierre and Anne-Cécile, even if he remains a “background presence”. Pierre and Anne-Cécile told me that the 2022 “growing season was hot but not blazing though it was certainly dry. We avoided the climatic excesses of 2021 and thus we were much less stressed. We picked from the 25th of August to the 2nd of September and brought in ripe and very clean fruit where yields were good though certainly not high. Potential alcohols averaged right at 13% for both colors and between the reasonable sugars and clean fruit, we had zero problems with the fermentations. Somewhat curiously, the malos for the reds proceeded relatively quickly while those for the whites took their time. Why is of course impossible to say. Stylistically, the reds are like a more structured version of 2017 but with less alcohol than those from 2018, 2019 or 2020.” I have said this before but if you’re not familiar with the Lumpp wines,, especially the reds, you’re missing out as they deliver excellent quality for very fair prices, particularly in the context of today’s frothy Burgundy market. Moreover, their 2022s are no exception and I warmly recommend them.
