PULIGNY MONTRACHET FRANCOIS CARILLON 2018
BURGHOUND : 89-92
2018 Puligny-Montrachet: (from 8 different lieux-dits that total a whopping 4 ha). There is a whiff of the exotic in the form of passion fruit present on the acacia blossom and citrus peel-inflected nose. There is again very good volume as well as a relatively sophisticated mouthfeel to the middle weight flavors where the seductive and lingering finish is supported by a moderately firm acid spine. This is an excellent Puligny villages and recommended. (89-92)/2025+
François Carillon, brother of Jacques (see immediately below), farms 15 ha which are roughly proportioned between 1 ha in red and 14 ha in white. As to the 2018 vintage, Carillon told me that “the growing season was complicated due to the dryness which provoked some hydric stress in our vines. It was definitely hot, but it was really the dryness that caused us some grief.
The difficulties were exacerbated by the huge production, which obviously means that the vines have to find water to keep the berries from wilting as well as to drive the photosynthetic activity to bring such a large number of bunches to proper maturity.
We picked from the 26 thof August to the 6 thof September, which is longer than normal because we picked only in the morning. I had two picking teams of 50 and 40 people respectively and even with such large teams and impeccably clean fruit, it still was a slog to get everything into the cuverie. I expected a larger volume but virtually everyone, me included, was surprised by what we call the rendement en jus [volume of juice or, really must[. Otherwise, we had no trouble with the vinifications or malos and overall, I am extremely happy with the results.” I found the Carillon 2018s to be excellent; in fact they may well be the best wines that I have seen Carillon produce since the brothers went their own ways.
